How the tournament works

You guide England through a three-match cup run. Beat Ghana in Round 1, Germany in the semifinal, and Argentina in the final to win the World Cup.

How instructions work

During the match you can shout tactical prompts that influence England's movement, spacing, pressure, and shooting behavior.

AI modes

The game includes Original Mode and a short-horizon on-device Foundation batch mode. If the Foundation option is not supported on a device, Three Lions automatically falls back to Original Mode.

Original Mode uses built-in tactical logic and prompt parsing.
Foundation batch mode plans short movement sequences on supported devices.
Gameplay continues even if the advanced mode is unavailable.

Progress and celebration

Your manager name and championship goal-difference results are stored on-device. Winning the final unlocks a full celebration screen and adds your run to the persistent leaderboard.

Leaderboard entries track goal difference across the full cup run.
Repeat wins build a longer history for the same manager name.
You can restart the whole tournament from Settings.

Troubleshooting

If the match appears frozen, close the instruction sheet or settings sheet. Gameplay pauses while those panels are open.
If advanced AI mode is missing, your device likely does not support the on-device Foundation feature used by the app.
If you want a tactical reset, use halftime to submit a fresh instruction before the second half begins.
If you want to start over from the beginning, use Restart Entire Game in Settings.

Three Lions is an iOS app built for quick portrait play sessions.
The project is currently configured for iOS 26.0 and later.
The advanced Foundation batch mode only appears on supported devices.
Match logic and AI behaviors are designed to run on-device.

How do I win the World Cup in Three Lions?

Win three consecutive knockout matches as England: Ghana first, Germany second, and Argentina in the final. If England loses, the tournament resets back to Ghana.

What kind of instructions can I give the team?

England responds to short tactical prompts such as spreading out, defending deep, pressing, attacking, or favoring a specific shirt number like #9.

Why does the game pause when I open a menu?

The live match pauses whenever the instruction editor or settings screen is open so you can make changes without losing game time.

Why do I not see the Foundation AI option?

That mode only appears on devices that support the on-device Foundation capabilities required by the app. Unsupported devices continue using Original Mode automatically.
